AW insists we didn’t deserve derby defeat "It's frustrating the first goal was handball the a 2nd yellow card! We played with the handbrake on in the first half! We are not playing with confidence at the moment! Top 4 is our target now!” Sagna suffered a broken leg! Allen wants a hand shake somehow this is news? Graham talks!

  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists they did not deserve derby defeat to Tottenham yesterday.
The Frenchman was defiant after the final whistle, however, claiming that Spurs' first goal should not have been allowed to stand because Rafael van der Vaart handled the ball before unleashing the volley that put the hosts ahead.

He said: "It's frustrating because the first goal was handball and I wonder what the linesmen do in these situations. It's a second yellow card as well, because he already had a yellow card."

Gervinho, Mikel Arteta and Theo Walcott were all guilty of missing chances in the first half - something which clearly annoyed the Arsenal boss.

"We played with the handbrake on in the first half," he said.

"But at half-time we came out and had a go at them and normally got back to 1-1.

"But then we didn't push on enough and let them get back into the game. That shows we are not playing with confidence at the moment. We want to protect our result too much when we have one."

He added “we played a little but with the handbrake on. Even playing like that we had four chances. At half time we came out and had a go at them and got it back to 1-1. I felt again that we didn't push on enough and let them get back into the game.”

We lack a little bit of confidence at the moment, and we just need to protect a result when we have one.

“I do not think like that, I think at the moment we have to set ourselves a realistic target and to get in touch with the teams who are fighting for the Champions League positions. If you say today we will win the league it is not realistic.

At the moment we are 12 points behind Manchester United and Manchester City - that's not realistic to say today that we will win the league. We have to fight to come back into a much better position, that's reality”
  • Arsenal fullback Bacary Sagna suffered a broken leg in their derby defeat to Tottenham.
Sagna was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after falling badly in the 68th minute and news of the break was later revealed by the French Football Federation.

Sagna joins an injury list at the Emirates that already includes Jack Wilshere, Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby and Johan Djourou.

Carl Jenkinson, a summer signing from Charlton, came on for Sagna against Spurs and could now be set for an extended run in the first team.
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has rubbished Clive Allen's claims he snubbed the Tottenham coach.
The pair clashed at the end of the North London derby which saw Spurs beat Arsenal 2-1. A policeman had to intervene as they squared up.

Wenger hit back: "I shook the hand of the manager and the assistant manager.

"How many hands do I have to shake? Is there a prescription?

"No words were exchanged and if the story of the game is Clive Allen, you must ask him.

"He wanted to make himself the story? Yes."
  • Arsenal legend George Graham doesn't rate the current team as top four class.
The Scot says should they finish in the top four, it will be manager Arsene Wenger's greatest achievement.

"I admire what Arsene has brought to the club, the beautiful football his team's have played, and the success he has brought to Arsenal," said Graham.

"But it feels like Arsenal's position, as a club permanently in the top four of the Premier League, is slipping away."
  • England coach Fabio Capello is impressed by Arsenal teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Providing England secure their passage to next summer's European Championships by grabbing at least a point in Montenegro on Friday, Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to find himself propelled into the senior ranks.

"I have been impressed with him," Capello said.

"He is a really interesting player. He is a good player, who has a lot quality and is playing at a really high level.

"He will be a really interesting player for the next friendly games before the Euros, which hopefully will happen for us."
