Nasri & Frimpong did clash in the tunnel! AW "It was an unfair result but I felt we were a bit naive. We did not take our corners very well but overall what is frustrating is that we lost a game we looked the winner of! We put a lot of effort in and are not rewarded! Frimpong & Coquelin did very well! It’s more important for us to finish in the top four! Chamberlin looked special" Per, Santos talk!

  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was left disappointed with their Carling Cup defeat to Manchester City.
Wenger labelled his much-changed side naive after they conceded late on, Sergio Aguero's goal stemming from an Arsenal corner.

He said: "It was an unfair result but I felt we were a bit naive. I felt as well we did not take our corners very well but overall what is frustrating is that we lost a game we looked the winner of.

"We put a lot of effort in and are not rewarded. We lacked a little bit of experience to be decisive in the final third."

Wenger did take some positives out of the game but insisted the Premier League was always his priority despite being so close to the semi-finals of this competition.

"I think in midfield (Emmanuel) Frimpong did well and (Francis) Coquelin did well," he said.

"Sometimes you could feel in the final third we lacked a little in creativity - but overall we did well and I cannot fault the team. They did very well and showed heart, quality and desire.

"You can argue that we lost the easiest trophy to win, but if you look at the teams who are still in it doesn't seem as easy to win as usually.

"I consider the championship the most important for us, more than anything else it is important to finish in the top four."
  • No punches were thrown between Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong and Manchester City's Samir Nasri in their clash last night.
Nasri was involved in a tunnel bust-up with former Arsenal team-mate Frimpong after helping Manchester City reach the Carling Cup semi-finals.

The pair, who clashed on Twitter when Nasri left for City earlier in the season, gestured to each other as they approached the tunnel after the final whistle of a tie settled by Sergio Aguero's only goal.

Arsenal denied punches were thrown but a witness confirmed the players confronted each other as they left for the dressing rooms at the Emirates Stadium.
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger denies he was reacting towards Marouane Chamakh after he missed a late header last night.
Chamakh had the chance to cancel out Manchester City's 1-0 lead in the Carling Cup, but failed to connect with a late cross.

"He wasn’t far away from the ball. I did not react at Chamakh, it was more frustration that we did not score and come back. I felt as well that Squillaci was behind him - if someone else goes in behind him it was a tap-in at the far post," Wenger said.
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was pleased with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in defeat toManchester City.
The winger was threatening in the 1-0 Carling Cup loss.

"We lacked a little bit of experience to be more decisive in the final third but Chamberlain looked the whole night like he could deliver something special. He has shown already tonight that he has moved forward, considering where he was in the last two months. He has improved a lot already," Wenger said.

The experience tonight shows that it's good sometimes to be positive and as well patient. I was very patient with him until now and I feel that it is important sometimes that you hold them back a little bit and keep them on the training ground. He has shown that he has improved a lot.

He has surprised me by the consistency of this game. You pushed him off the ball easily two months ago but tonight you could see that his resistance in the challenges, his strength in the duels, is there. That is of course very important at the top level."
  • Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie has paid tribute to Gary Speed.
Van Persie has used his matchday programme notes to pay tribute to the Wales manager, Gary Speed, who died at the weekend.

"I was shocked to hear about Gary Speed’s death on Sunday," said the Arsenal captain.

"In my first couple of years here I played against him during his spell at Bolton; I remember him as a really fit, good player who could read the game very well and had done so much in the Premier League over a number of years.

"I didn’t know him personally, but he really came to my attention again when he made Aaron captain of Wales - that’s when I started to find out a bit more about him, having a couple of chats with Aaron and thinking what a brave and forward-thinking move it was to give a 20 year-old that responsibility.

"It shows you what kind of guy he was, and that he had some great ideas for the future of Welsh football. Two Dutch friends of mine, Michael Kuijpers and Raymond Verheijen, were his physio and fitness coach with Wales - they told me some great stories about how good Gary was with the players and how well admired he was.

"Looking at the newspapers, every single tribute was about his footballing life, creating a lovely picture of who he was and all that he achieved. It’s nice, because it ensures the younger generation get to know him properly and get a feel for everything he did.

"My deep sympathy goes to his family, friends and everyone who knew him."
  • Manchester City fullback Gael Clichy feels former club Arsenal will finish in the top four.
Clichy, who left the Gunners for Manchester City in a £7million move in the summer, says he never doubted manager Arsene Wenger’s ability to turn round their fortunes, even when the knives were out for him in August.

“I always said they will be near the top at the end of the season and I still believe that,” said Clichy. “They had everything against them at the start of the season – red cards, injuries, own-goals.

“I always said they should keep going because they will get on top of that – and now they are showing their start wasn’t right. They will put it right for the end of the season, that is for sure.”
  • Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker admits he's still adapting to life in London.
The German international, 27, said he struggled to adapt following his hurriedly-arranged move.

But Mertesacker has since helped Arsenal go on an impressive run of form, and become the first English side to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

He said: “I want to prove that I can make it in London.

"My transfer went through very quickly, and it is a huge changeover to make in one’s career.

“London is a huge city, but you just have to dive in and try to play a part rather than crawling away and hiding.

“Otherwise you won’t stand a chance – you will sink like a stone. You simply have to try to speak English, drive on the left and get involved.”
  • Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie feels Mikel Arteta has stepped up a level since his arrival.
Arteta was a deadline-day signing from Everton in August and he has impressed the Dutch striker.

"What I really like at the moment is that you can see people stepping up a level and growing in confidence," Van Persie said. "I can really notice that around the team.

"For example, Mikel Arteta is playing really well. He’s so intelligent. He knows when to go forward, he knows when to sit back. Sometimes Alex Song makes a run forward, and because of his experience, Mikel can read the game perfectly, knows when to go forward, when to help his team out, or when to play for others.

"Everyone can see he has grown into his role, and you can tell he has played many games in the Premier League."
  • Arsenal fullback Andre Santos is happy with his progress since arriving in August from Fenerbahce.
Santos admits it took him time to find his feet in the Premier League but says he is enjoying his football at Emirates Stadium after a period of adjustment.

“I believe I needed a little run of games to get used to everything,” he said.

“I feel a lot better on the pitch now - I’m getting to know the characteristics of all my team-mates and this is very important for me. I’m learning to position myself better on the pitch and to read the game better as well. All of this comes with experience.

“English football is fast and strong and I think the best in the world – the experience we get here makes each of us get better every day.

“I’m very well and feeling really good here at Arsenal. I would like to thank everyone that helped me to get here, everyone at the Club now, and the fans – who are always behind us.

“I have to say that I’m very happy here and hope to stay here for a long time. I came here to win titles and be victorious, and I’m sure I can achieve that here.”
  • Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky is again attracting interest from German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.
The Czech Republic captain emerged as a target for the Wolves in the summer but nothing ever eventuated and now they could make a move for him in January.

Rosicky is currently being used sparingly by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger who might choose to get some cash for the 31-year old former Borussia Dortmund man in the winter market as he comes out of contract next summer.
  • The agent of New York Red Bulls defender Tim Ream has revealed Arsenal made an offer for him last year.
Ream is set for trials with Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion.

Patrick McCabe said: “There are numerous teams that have been watching Tim for the last two years.

“I won’t comment on specific clubs at this time but they are from England, France, Holland, Scotland and Germany.

“Arsenal did make an offer to purchase Tim at the end of the 2010 season.

“The offer was rejected and no further negotiations followed.

“Red Bull was not interested in selling Tim at that time.”

Koscielny "The mentality of the team has changed, we’re strong! Also we have the players who can make the difference like Robin, Gervinho & Theo!" AW “Vermaelen showed character to come back and score a great goal” Szczesny "You can see that we are up for a fight! Songs showing what you can do with confidence!" Eduardo could go bankrupt! Gotze wants AFC move! £15m double bid for Kolo & De Jong! Torje Linked!

  • Laurent Koscielny says confidence is surging through the Arsenal squad.
Koscielny is part of a much-improved defensive unit and he is happy with how the campaign is unfolding.

"When we started the season we lost a lot of games and we had to do something to change that," he said. "All the players changed their mentality and we have seen that we have a good team. All of the players defend and attack and for us that is very important.

"For two months we have been strong as a team, we have done the job well and defended very well. We have the quality to do something good in the Champions League and Premier League.

"The mentality of the team has changed and we are strong. Also we have the [attacking] players who can make the difference, players like Robin, Gervinho and Theo."
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised Thomas Vermaelen's character after their 1-1 draw with Fulham.
Vermaelen scored both the game's goals.

Wenger said: "I believe he scored unfortunately [at his own end] - left-footed players many times refuse to play with their right foot. But he has shown enough character to come back and score a great goal. On crosses he is very good, he reads the ball well. Overall he had a very good game.

"It's unfortunate to drop two points today because overall I thought we did enough to win it."
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger intends to play a strong team against Carling Cup opponents Manchester City this week.
The Gunners face City in the Cup quarterfinals.

Wenger said: “I will certainly play some players who have played less.

“But still we will try to have a good mixture between young players and experience so we have a good chance to win the game.”
  • Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny felt they showed great determination for their draw with Fulham.
Szczesny says they playing with more steel this season.

"You can see from today that we are up for a fight," said Szczesny.

"Maybe it’s not as beautiful as before but it’s effective. I think we’ve got more experienced players this season.

"We’ve got players like Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker who like to fight. Mikel played for Everton who play different kind of football. I think the players that have come in are very creative as well, like Cesc and Nasri. They are creative but they are different.

"Maybe they are not as beautiful in the way they play but it doesn’t matter if you win the game."
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is excited by the combination of Robin van Persie and Gervinho.
The manager believes that their movement is causing plenty of problems for opposition defences.

"Yes, they love to interchange up front," said Wenger.

"You could see that the other night [against Borussia Dortmund]. Robin can play left, right, all three can play in all of the positions.

“That gives you more flexibility and more opportunities to be dangerous because they can make runs diagonally.”
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits Alex Song has surprised everyone at the club.
The Cameroon midfielder has been exceptional in recent weeks.

"I thought about that Fulham game [in 2006] as well today," said Wenger.

"It shows that players need to be given time and confidence. Unfortunately in the big clubs you cannot always do it. He is one of the players who surprised everybody. You wouldn’t expect what he delivers at the moment.

"He looks to me also to be a creative player. He was a centre back, but him and Andre Santos are players who look like they could play in creative midfield."
  • Former Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva has seen an agent's dispute threaten his financial security.
Eduardo faces having his house and car seized in Croatia over a legal dispute with his former agent.

The Brazil-born forward has until the end of the month to prevent a court order in Zagreb from also freezing his bank account.

Zdravko Mamic, who is also the executive vice-president of Eduardo’s former club Dinamo Zagreb, is suing the 28-year-old for £630,000 - which could rise to more than £900,000 with interest - over an agreement signed in 2001.

Mamic claims he is entitled to 20 per cent of the player’s earnings but has not received payment since Eduardo moved from Dinamo to Arsenal in 2007.

Eduardo claims the agreement is not valid, in part because he did not understand Croatian when he signed the contract with Mamic on his 18th birthday.
  • Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze is keen to hear from Arsenal.
The Emirates boss Arsene Wenger has been tracking the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, 19 (below) and is said to be weighing up a huge bid for his services.

And Gotze told pals he was massively impressed with the Gunners set-up when the two sides met in the Champions League clash in London on Wednesday night.

Mario was extremely taken by the stadium and the manner in which Arsenal are doing things on the pitch, a source said:

“He likes the way Arsenal play the game and for him there are only two clubs where he’d like to play once he moves from Dortmund - Arsenal or Barcelona."
  • The agent of Gabriel Torje has confirmed the interest of Arsenal in the Romanian.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is having chief scout Steve Rowley watch Torje this season.

"Yes, it is true, Arsenal like him," his agent said.

"Nothing official, I'll say that there have been no talks, because when the player does not want to move ...

"In January, there are no chances that he'll move. For June we will see ... However it is clear that the player is fine in Udine.
  • Nottingham Forest defender Jamal Lascelles is on Arsenal’s radar.
Arsenal want to sign Forest defender Lascelles.

The 18-year-old will not be sold cheaply.

AW "The positives are we have shown an exceptional spirit and desire, refusal to lose the game! You could see many players were on the fringe, disappointing because we dropped 2 points, but we keep our unbeaten run going!" RVP “I amaze myself sometimes!” Santos, Vermaelen talk! Wolfsburg Rosicky bid! PSG Chamakh bid!

  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits his players suffered a Champions League hangover for their draw with Fulham.
Thomas Vermaelen scored at both ends of the pitch on the day.

Wenger believed his squad had shown "a bit of mental and physical fatigue" after their exertions in the midweek victory over Borussia Dortmund which had secured safe passage into the knockout stages.

"The positives are we have shown an exceptional spirit and desire, refusal to lose the game," theArsenal manager said.

"You could see many players were on the fringe, and that we had not completely digested the Champions League game on Wednesday night.

"We needed to dig deep, the circumstances in the game went against us because the moment when Fulham scored they were not crossing halfway a lot.

"We scored an own goal at a moment when it was all us, earlier in the season, we could have lost this game, but we came back.

"It is disappointing because we dropped two points, but at least it keeps our unbeaten run going."
  • Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie admits his stunning form has surprised him.
He has revealed he is so good that sometimes he even amazes himself.

The 17-goal Arsenal hitman said: "I feel I'm a real No 9 now. I think like a striker.

"Sometimes I amaze even myself on that. It's really great how things are going but at the same time I have to try and look at it calmly."
  • Arsenal fullback Andre Santos admits his defensive weaknesses have been exposed this season.
Those defensive frailties were evident during a difficult first half at Chelsea.

However Santos sparked the second-half turnaround with a 49th-minute equaliser.

“I know I can play well and, if I am here playing for Arsenal, it is because I’m a good player,” said Santos.

“I sat down in the corner of the dressing room at half-time against Chelsea and thought about that. I focused on the fact I must be better.

“I thought about it and decided, ‘I have to go back and play much better’. Things have definitely got better for me since then and I am still trying to improve.”
  • Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen admits he was hurt by their early season critics.
But the Belgian was happy to ink a new deal.

Talking about his sense of loyalty to Arsenal, Vermaelen said: “I thought about the situation with my contract for a really long time.

“Of course, I knew there were doubts from outside about the club. But the most important thing for me is that I feel happy here.

“I have only really played one year of games at Arsenal, so I wanted to give something back to the club that has looked after me.

“I believe in the club, I think the structure is really good. They are the main reasons I stayed.

“I think we can challenge the other clubs like Man City and Man United. We have to look at ourselves and we had to do that when our start wasn’t perfect.

“The Carling Cup is a trophy we want to win – and not just because of losing last year’s final.”
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has challenged Andrey Arshavin to fight his way back into the first team.
He maintains it is up to the likes of Arshavin, who was an unused substitute in midweek, to force their way back into contention.

"I feel sorry for every player who does not play, but competition is part of our job," he said. "You must accept that in some periods of your career somebody can get in front of you."
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he's unhappy with the timing of the African Nations Cup.
Wenger could lose Gervinho — who was yesterday shortlisted for African Footballer of the Year — for the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts on January 21.

He said: "It is a concern. You lose players two weeks before the competition starts and sometimes they come back really exhausted."
  • Arsenal hero Robert Pires feels Robin van Persie will sign a new contract.
There are fears that he will follow Samir Nasri, who left for Manchester City in the summer when he refused a new deal.

But Pires said: “I think he will stay. Why? He has status at Arsenal and he is highly regarded. But I also believe that Arsenal need to sign some important players next summer. That will help to keep him.”
  • Wolfsburg are chasing Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky.
The Germans are chasing Rosicky for the January market.

The 31-year-old has made just six Premier League appearances so far this season and could be open to a new challenge elsewhere, having spent five seasons in London.
  • Paris Saint Germain are ready to spend big to land Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh.
The Moroccan international, 27, has failed to make the expected impact at The Emirates since his move from Bordeaux to London last year.

Manager Arsene Wenger insists he is still part of his plans, but PSG’s move could prove difficult to resist.

A move to Paris could also enable Chamakh to link up with Beckham if PSG sign him up after the expiry of his contract with LA Galaxy.
  • Manchester United ace Ashley Young has again admitted kid brother Kyle could be something special.
Young has two young brothers making their way in the game.

Lewis Young, 22, is at Northampton Town, while Kyle Young, 15, is coming through the academy at Arsenal.

"He may well be the best of all of us," says his older sibling. "I wouldn’t tell him that, though, because he spends enough time saying it himself."
  • Arsenal striker Wellington is set to end his loan with Levante in January.
He vented his anger on Twitter this week at the situation and coach Juan Ignacio Martinez looks unlikely to pick him any time soon.

Levante do not want to anger Arsenal and are ready to let him return to The Gunners, who are already looking at alternative loan placements in France and Greece.

AW "Goal line tech cannot get here sooner for me! Mikel is an extremely important player in our team because he has both sides that make a team good!" Song “Jack coming back will make the midfield even better!” Arteta "We’re trying to improve the team & we still need to catch up on other teams!” RVP fitness schedule in place! Szczesny, Vermaelen, Rosicky talk! £6m Vargas Jan bid!

  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is delighted with the contribution of midfielder Mikel Arteta.
Arteta has contributed goals and assists to the Arsenal cause and Wenger believes his all-round game has helped lay the foundations for an unbeaten run that now stretches to nine games in all competitions.

"Mikel is an extremely important player in our team because he has both sides that make a team good," Wenger said.

"He is consistent going forward, technically fantastic and he works very hard for the team. He is an organiser too and does the job defensively in vital parts. We look solid at the moment and he has to take a big part of the credit because he does both jobs offensively and defensively - with quality.

"I am very happy with his defensive job and he is rewarded for it because he plays. If I play him it is because I am happy with the job he does and if he had not done such a consistent job defensively he would not be in the team.

"I believe that Mikel Arteta is a winner and on the pitch he does what is needed to help the team win. That's what I rate."
  • Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is delighted with news that goal line technology is set to be introduced next season.
FA General Secretary Alex Horne confirmed the possibility of implementing the system in the Premier League for next season when he spoke on Thursday.

Wenger reiterated his desire for officials to act on the technology - and -as quickly as possible.

“The sooner, the better for me,” he said. “The sooner they go further, the better. I have always been a big fan of it and given it every support.

“There are no [doubts for me]. The concern of course is that the technology can make mistakes but still statistically we will improve a lot.

“Overall we all have memories of when this technology would stop an injustice, so let's go for it - as quickly as possible.”
  • Arsenal midfielder Alex Song feels they're still missing the influence of young Jack Wilshere.
The England international is on course for a January return and, no matter how well Arsenal are playing, Song believes he will add something to the team.

"Jack is a very good player. We need everyone," he said. "When we have everyone in the team we are stronger and more confident.

We need every player because we have a lot of games.

"We don’t just think about if Jack is coming back. Everybody has their job to do in the team. I hope Jack will come back soon and Bacary as well and when everybody comes, we will see Arsenal playing.

"Jack is a good player, we have good players in the team and everybody is just trying to do their job. We never know who starts the game – the boss makes the choice.

"Today I am very happy and I am very lucky to have good players around me and when Jack comes back he will be welcome in the team. It will be really good for us.
  • Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta says no-one at the club is getting carried away with their form.
The Gunners may still be somewhat off the pace in the Premier League despite a fifth straight win last weekend, but Arteta feels
Wenger's squad are now very much moving in the right direction as they prepare for the visit of Fulham.

"We are trying to improve the team and have been in a really good run over the past two months," the 29-year-old Spaniard said.

"However, we are still catching up on other teams in the Premier League because we had a really bad start, so there is still a lot to do."
  • Arsenal have draw up a schedules plan for Robin van Persie to keep their star player fresh.
Van Persie has been in irresistible form, scoring 17 goals this season - he has netted 38 times in 41 matches in 2011 - as Arsenal have revived their season domestically and in Europe.

However, he has struggled in previous campaigns because of injury and the Gunners are desperate to make sure it does not happen again.

They have been looking at the forthcoming fixtures to see where they can rest him and also persuaded the Dutch FA to rest him for one of their two friendlies earlier this month.

Van Persie is set to play against Fulham on Saturday, but is likely to be rested against Manchester City in the Carling Cup and also be left at home for the final Champions’ League group match at Olympiacos next month.

Arsene Wenger and his staff have mapped out scenarios that would see him potentially sitting out Carling Cup and FA Cup ties, as well as rotating games over the busy festive period.
  • Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny believes they can go all the way in this season’s Champions League.
The Gunners are already qualified for the next round.

Szczesny said: "If we can keep going and winning like we have been, we can win the competition. We believe we can do it.

  • Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is happy to rotate through the first team.
Since his comeback, Vermaelen has featured with both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the back - and he says hunger for places is healthy for boss Arsène Wenger.

“The boss has a lot of choices at the moment, and all of the centre-backs are fit which helps too,” he said.

“There’s a lot of competition and that can only be good for the team.

“It’s good to be able to rest players when they need it, so I don’t think it’s a problem if we have to rotate because we train together all the time.

“We know each other’s qualities, so it doesn’t matter who plays on the day.”
  • Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky feels he's returning to his best form.

“Performance-wise I’d say things are going fairly well,” Rosicky said.

“I’d definitely like to be more productive - it’s been a while since I scored a goal, for example, so I have to look at that and hopefully I’ll be back on target soon.

"I think everybody [gets a lift if they do well at international level]," he added.

“Every positive experience you have in your private life, your international football, or anything else for that matter, has benefits in your game. If you’re happy then it’ll be obvious.

"From my point of view I have two good games for the Czech Republic behind me and hopefully that can continue in my form here at Arsenal.”
  • Arsenal hero Robert Pires is convinced Arsene Wenger will never leave the club.
Wenger cast doubt on his future at Emirates following a cryptic interview with a French magazine last week.

“I think he will die with Arsenal,” Pires said. “He is the same as Ferguson at Manchester United or Guy Roux at Auxerre. He will stay with Arsenal, in my opinion, because Arsenal needs him and he needs Arsenal. C’est l’amour.”

“There are so many good players in Africa that it’s a pleasure just to know I am among the 10 best players.

“If I am fortunate enough to win it I will be very happy, even more so at my young age. If I don’t win this trophy I will still be happy to be one of the ten best players of the year.”
